NSF H1 food-grade lubrication in dairy vacuum pumps

The short answer

NSF H1 designates a lubricant formulated for use where incidental contact with food is possible. Whether it is required on a given vacuum pump depends on whether a contact path exists between the pump and the product.

Where no contact path exists, mineral oil is the correct specification. Where one exists, food-grade lubrication is a HACCP matter.

01What the H1 registration covers

H1 lubricants are formulated for incidental contact. The registration is a control for contact that was not intended but may occur: a leaking seal, oil mist carried in an exhaust, or a drip onto a surface that later meets product.

The manufacturer's own vacuum pump oil guidance describes its standard mineral grades as suitable in many industries, and names food among the industries requiring synthetic oils.

02The drop-in grade

The viscosity grade is the same, so the product is a drop-in on grade. Whether the existing charge requires flushing before the food-grade oil is introduced has been put to the manufacturer. No published answer has been located, so none is stated here.

03Establishing whether a contact path exists

The assessment belongs to the plant's HACCP team. On a vacuum pump there are four places to examine.

The exhaust. Where does it discharge? An oil-lubricated rotary vane pump carries oil mist in its exhaust, and a saturated separation element passes it.

The vacuum line. Does it connect at any point to a vessel, filler, pick-up head or packaging surface that meets product?

Backstreaming. What happens to the oil on a mis-sequenced stop or a pressure reversal?

The oil change. Where is it carried out, and does the drained oil pass across any food-contact surface?
Position

Where none of these paths exists, mineral oil is correct and no change is recommended. Where one exists, it is the type of finding an audit will identify.

04Certification and origin

Certification

MOSH and MOAH, the transfer of mineral oil hydrocarbons into foodstuffs, is a tightening European regulatory concern. It is relevant to any plant exporting to Europe or supplying a customer who does.

Is food-grade H1 oil required in a vacuum pump?

Only where a contact path exists between the pump and the product: an exhaust discharging over a line, a vacuum line meeting product or packaging, oil mist carry-over, or backstreaming. Where no contact path exists, mineral oil is the correct specification.

Is food-grade vacuum oil a drop-in replacement for mineral ISO 100?

The food-grade grade is NSF H1 in ISO 100, the same viscosity grade, so it is a drop-in on grade. Whether the existing charge requires flushing has been put to the manufacturer and will be published when answered.
