Oil change intervals for oil-lubricated rotary vane pumps in hot, dusty service

The short answer

The published oil change interval is 500 to 2,000 operating hours. That range is stated for a clean, dry air stream and an operating temperature below 100 °C.

For continuous duty the manufacturer gives approximately 1,000 hours, and states that harsh conditions require a shorter interval still.

A plant at 40–45 °C in heavy dust and high humidity meets neither stated condition. The manufacturer does not publish a corrected figure for that service, so the daily oil-colour check is the practical control.

The intake filter interval is given as a range of 40 to 200 hours. The range is wide because the interval is set by the air the pump is breathing rather than by the pump. In heavy airborne dust the lower figure applies. A filter cleaned on a 200-hour cycle in a dusty plant spends most of its service life partially blocked.

02Why the published figure does not transfer

Oil life is governed by temperature, contamination and water ingress. A plant in this corridor supplies all three continuously.

TEMPERATURE
Oxidation accelerates with operating temperature. Heat shortens the useful life of the charge.
DUST
Whatever passes the intake filter reaches the oil, and from there the clearance between vane and housing bore.
HUMIDITY
Water condenses into the charge. The condition is visible in the oil and has a published remedy.

The manufacturer's application engineering department has been asked for a corrected interval for continuous operation at 40–45 °C in heavy dust, and whether a high-temperature grade is offered for this duty. No such figure appears in any published document we have located.

03The daily oil check

The manufacturer specifies a visual check of the oil. It is the only diagnostic available in the absence of a derated interval.

Milky oil is common in plants with high ambient humidity, particularly where a hot pump is stopped and allowed to cool. It indicates condensed water rather than a mechanical fault.

Establishing the interval from the plant

Record oil condition daily against running hours, and record how many hours each charge lasted. After three changes the plant has an interval measured under its own conditions, which is more reliable than a figure quoted for it by a supplier.

04Identifying the consumables

The oil separation element, the intake filter, the vane set and the float chamber are specific to the pump variant. They are identified from the nameplate on the pump, which carries the model and the build.

Identification from the nameplate

A photograph of the nameplate is sufficient to identify the consumable set for that pump and to quote it. Where the nameplate is unreadable, the plant number and a photograph of the pump body are normally enough.

A food-grade vacuum oil to NSF H1 in ISO 100 is available. It is the same viscosity grade as the mineral ISO 100 oil in general service, so it is a drop-in on grade. Whether food-grade lubrication is required depends on the contact path, which is a HACCP determination rather than a supplier's recommendation.

05Annual consumption per pump

Calculated from the published intervals above, a single pump in continuous duty consumes in the order of €850–1,200 per year in consumables, excluding vanes.

Multiplied by the installed pump count, this gives the annual consumable budget for the vacuum line, and it is the basis on which a planned annual order is built.
