Lubricant storage temperature in high-ambient plants

Food-grade lubricants are specified for storage at 0–40 °C. A store room in a 40–45 °C plant exceeds it.

The short answer

Food-grade lubricants are typically specified for storage between 0 and 40 °C. Fuchs Cassida carries that specification.

A store room in a plant with 40–45 °C ambient exceeds that range for much of the year. Oxidation accelerates with temperature and the additive package depletes, so the charge entering the machine has already lost service life.

The storage specification appears on a data sheet that is rarely issued to the stores function. The condition is common and it is not usually the result of a maintenance decision.

02What elevated storage temperature does

Oxidation is a chemical reaction and accelerates with temperature. The base oil oxidises, the additive package depletes, and in humid conditions water enters the drum through the daily thermal cycle.

ADDITIVES DEPLETE FIRST
The additive package is what makes the product an engineered lubricant. It is also the component that depletes first under heat.
NO VISIBLE CHANGE
The oil appears unchanged when decanted. There is no colour shift and no odour. The reduction is in service life.
MISATTRIBUTED
The oil interval runs short, and the cause is attributed to the pump, the dust or the oil quality. All three may be present without being the cause.

An NSF H1 registration attaches to a formulation. A heat-degraded charge of that formulation is no longer performing as the certified product.

03Corrective actions

Measure the store room. A max/min thermometer costs approximately fifteen euros. One week of readings establishes the position.

Provide shade and cross-ventilation. The objective is to fall below 40 °C, not to condition the space.

Rotate stock, first in first out. Date each drum on receipt and issue the oldest first.

Order to a schedule rather than in bulk. A year of oil held at 45 °C is not a saving.

Seal drums and store them upright. Water ingress through the daily thermal cycle is the mechanism behind milky oil.
Establishing the position

An oil analysis on a sample from a drum held six months in the store will establish whether the oil in stock is performing to specification, and whether a short oil interval originates at the pump or at the shelf.

The R5 instruction manual recommends the same discipline for the operating charge: where there is no established experience of oil life under the prevailing conditions, carry out an oil analysis every 500 operating hours and set the change interval from the result.

The temperature reached by a specific store room has not been established. It is measured rather than estimated, and the measurement is the first action on the list above.

No published table converts hours above 40 °C into remaining service life. The result depends on the formulation, the packaging, the humidity and the thermal cycle. An oil analysis establishes it directly.
