The storage specification appears on a data sheet that is rarely issued to the stores function. The condition is common and it is not usually the result of a maintenance decision.
Oxidation is a chemical reaction and accelerates with temperature. The base oil oxidises, the additive package depletes, and in humid conditions water enters the drum through the daily thermal cycle.
An NSF H1 registration attaches to a formulation. A heat-degraded charge of that formulation is no longer performing as the certified product.
An oil analysis on a sample from a drum held six months in the store will establish whether the oil in stock is performing to specification, and whether a short oil interval originates at the pump or at the shelf.
