An enzymatic and chelating cleaning regime is documented to extend element life from 2–3 years to 4–5 years, with approximately 25% lower total cost of ownership.

Dairy UF requires chemical cleaning every 18 to 24 hours. Cleaning chemistry is therefore a continuous consumption item, and its composition determines the service life of the elements.

02Element life is set by the cleaning regime

A membrane does not wear mechanically. It fouls, is cleaned, and each cleaning cycle recovers slightly less flux than the last. The element is retired when flux recovery has fallen far enough that the line can no longer hold its rate.

CONVENTIONAL CIP
Aggressive caustic and acid remove the foulant and progressively degrade the membrane surface. Flux recovery falls measurably with each cycle. Elements reach retirement within the 1–3 year band.
ENZYMATIC + CHELATING
Enzymes digest the protein foulant and the chelating agent lifts mineral scale. Flux recovery remains near full for longer, and elements run into the 4–5 year band.
Safety

Acid must never be mixed with a chlorine-based cleaner. The combination releases chlorine gas. It is hazardous to personnel and destroys the membrane.

03Cost position

Membrane replacement is a significant operating cost in a dairy plant, and the difference between an 18-month and a 36-month element life is material to the annual budget.

The calculation requires the element count, the element size, the current replacement interval and the cleaning chemistry in use. Those figures are held by the plant and are not estimated here.
